KulmUNIty Garden: Development of a community garden at the Kaufplatz site in Kulmbach

The second semester of the first cohort of the bachelor's degree programme Lebensmittel- und Gesundheitswissenschaften at Faculty 7 in Kulmbach has now come to an end and we are looking back at the projects we planned and carried out as part of the Health Behaviour and Prevention seminar. In this context, the KulmUNIty Garden was created - a garden that is not only freely available to us, but also to the people of Kulmbach for use and harvesting.

A total of 30 students divided themselves into five project groups of six people each. All groups planned and implemented their own health promotion project during the semester.

The first group created the framework conditions and took care of setting up and coordinating the garden as well as public relations. The tasks included ordering the necessary resources (soil, beds, gardening tools), managing the budget, communicating with the city, looking after the KulmUNIty communication channels (email and Instagram account) and organising maintenance (e.g. through watering schedules and sponsorships).

The other four project groups each focused on a specific topic and target group and planned and implemented smaller health promotion projects around the KulmUNIty Garden.

The "Heart Health" group could be found at the KulmUNIty Garden on Campus Day, where in addition to a guided tour and information on heart-healthy plants in the KulmUNIty Garden, heart-healthy recipes and tastings of these were also offered.

Under the motto "KulmUNIty for the future", another project group in cooperation with the AWO and the Oberen Schule organised an afternoon on sustainable nutrition. The project group prepared food together with the primary school pupils and sowed seeds in the KulmUNIty Garden, imparting knowledge about sustainable nutrition and consumption patterns in a playful way.

Another project group chose international students from Faculty 7 as a target group and, against the backdrop of currently rising food prices, organised an evening in the garden around low-cost regional dishes and seasonal food shopping.

The project group "BUNT" had set itself the goal of bringing together refugee children from Ukraine, who are currently in the welcome class at the Pestalozzi primary school in Kulmbach, as well as children from the Kulmbach day care centre, and together with them to "colourfully" design the garden and playfully brush up on the topic of healthy nutrition. The raised beds in the garden have been colourfully designed since this afternoon.
